Upland soils formed in loess, the south and southwest run to cherty residuum over limestone, and elevations climb from about 380 feet where the Meramec meets the Mississippi to about 900 feet at the Rockwoods Range in Wildwood.

Ground and drainage
Most of the county is rolling loess upland, with Missouri River bluffs near Chesterfield, river bottoms, and Ozark foothills in the southwest. Near the rivers the ground is karst, with caves, sinkholes and springs. Clay subsoils swell when wet and shrink when dry, and frost works the base every winter. Drainage and a compacted rock base come first.
