Chesterfield Valley flooded in July 1993 when its Missouri River levee failed. The higher levees built since then opened the way for heavy commercial development, including the Chesterfield Commons retail area, and with it acres of parking. On the higher ground south of Highway 40, the work looks different: subdivision drives, long private roads and wooded lots.

We rebuild soft base, compact rock in layers, and pitch the surface so water crosses to the side rather than running the full length of the drive. A home drive typically takes 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot mix, with a thicker build where trailers and delivery trucks turn.

Yes. The Valley is Missouri River floodplain behind levees, so the ground is flatter and softer than the hills to the south. That usually means more base preparation, careful compaction and a real drainage plan, since there is little natural fall to move water off a large lot.
