Ground and drainage
Much of the upland here is nearly level, poorly drained claypan formed in loess over Illinoian till, and water moves through it very slowly. The county soil survey notes that standard tile lines do not work well in it. Surface drainage is the answer. We proof the subgrade, compact the base in lifts and grade so runoff leaves the pavement quickly.

Usually water in the base and then a freeze. On claypan ground water cannot drain down, so it sits under the pavement and expands when it freezes. A proofed subgrade, a compacted aggregate base and a grade that sheds water are the defense against it.
