Paving across Iron County
Iron County is the roughest ground we cover. Taum Sauk Mountain, at 1,772 feet the highest point in Missouri, is here, and Ironton, Arcadia and Pilot Knob sit together in the Arcadia Valley with the St. Francois Mountains around them. About 96,000 acres of the county are Mark Twain National Forest. The steep knobs are mostly dense, weather-resistant rhyolite, and red granite has been quarried near Elephant Rocks since 1869.
Good rock is local, which helps. Missouri rhyolite from these mountains is used as road metal and construction aggregate. We pave driveways, private and access roads, and business lots in hot-mix asphalt over compacted rock, grading and crowning first so steep drives shed water instead of channeling it. Call (866) 490-7680 for a free estimate and 25% off.
Ground and drainage
Steep grades and rock near the surface define paving here. The high knobs are dense rhyolite, and the valley ground between them is narrow. On slopes, runoff is what destroys pavement: it gets under an unsupported edge and carries base away. We shape the grade, compact rock in layers and keep water crossing the surface, not running down it.

Iron County paving questions
Is rock close to the surface a problem?
Not usually a bad one. Rock makes a firm foundation and it saves excavation. The work is in getting the grade right on top of it and making sure water has somewhere to go. Uneven rock gets leveled with compacted crushed stone before the asphalt goes down.
