At about 923 square miles of land it is the fourth-largest county in Missouri, and roughly 80 percent of it is in agricultural use, heaviest in the west and along the Missouri River floodplain. Union is the county seat and the city of Washington is the largest city. Most new building sits next to I-44 in the central and eastern part of the county. South of I-44 the ground is Salem Plateau: cherty red clay over cherty dolomite, with caves, springs and sinkholes. Nearer the Missouri River, loess caps the river hills and cuts away once water is allowed to run across it. Neither one holds a thin pad laid on bare dirt. We build a compacted rock base and get runoff off the surface.
