The name comes from an exposure of bedrock that runs across the width of the Cuivre River, which passes just south of the village. It was platted back in the 1830s and is still small, with Route OO as the road most driveways out here connect to.

Sometimes, but the water gets handled first. If runoff crosses the lane, it needs a crown and a ditch or culvert to move it. Paving over ground that stays wet just puts a hard shell over a soft base, and it breaks up within a season or two.
For pickups and tractors, chip seal or compacted recycled millings give a hard surface for less per foot. For loaded grain trucks, hot-mix asphalt over a thick compacted base is the better value, since it takes the weight without rutting where trucks turn.
