Main routes: Highway OO

Driveways and lots across Chain of Rocks

The name comes from an exposure of bedrock that runs across the width of the Cuivre River, which passes just south of the village. It was platted back in the 1830s and is still small, with Route OO as the road most driveways out here connect to.

We pave driveways, yard pads, church lots and farm lanes with a compacted rock base and hot-mix asphalt, and we price recycled millings or chip seal against hot mix on a long lane. Bottom ground near the river and upland ground behave differently under pavement, so we look at where the water goes before quoting anything. Free estimate at (866) 490-7680, and 25% off.

Driveway paving in Chain of Rocks

A country drive out here is usually long, with a gravel history and a soft spot or two that shows up after rain. We dig those out, compact rock in lifts, crown the surface and pave, typically 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot mix on a home drive. The approach at Route OO gets extra base, since that is where vehicles slow, turn and load the pavement hardest.

Parking lot paving in Chain of Rocks

Lot work around a village this size means a church, a shop building, a farm yard or a few spaces for a small business. Farm and shop pads carry concentrated weight from loaded trailers, so base depth matters more than square footage. We grade each pad to shed water away from the building instead of toward its foundation.

Road construction & private roads

Farm lanes, field access roads and short private roads all start the same way: crown, ditch, then compacted rock in layers. After that the surface is a budget decision. Chip seal or recycled millings suit light traffic, and hot mix earns its cost where loaded trucks run through the season.

General asphalt paving & repair

A lot of rural pavement near Chain of Rocks fails at the edges, where water gets under the asphalt and tires break the shoulder down. Overlays, edge rebuilds and better drainage are often the fix. When the base is gone, we rebuild it before we pave.

Ground, water and winter in Chain of Rocks

Lincoln County ground runs from river bottoms to rolling loess and glacial till farmland, and the bottoms hold water. A wet base under asphalt moves, and freeze-thaw winters finish the job by lifting the surface. We cut the drainage, compact each layer, then pave so runoff leaves quickly.

When you compare bids, ask each contractor for three numbers in writing: the compacted asphalt thickness, the base depth, and what happens to the water. Those three decide how long the surface lasts.

Compacted asphaltTypically 2 to 3 in. for a car drive
Stone baseTypically 4 to 8 in., compacted
Drive on itUsually 2 to 3 days, longer in heat
First sealcoatTypically 6 to 12 months after paving

Typical ranges. Your Chain of Rocks estimate is sized to the soil, the traffic and the drainage on your property.

Chain of Rocks paving questions

Straight answers for Chain of Rocks homeowners and property managers. Anything else, call (866) 490-7680.

Can you pave a lane that floods after heavy rain?

Sometimes, but the water gets handled first. If runoff crosses the lane, it needs a crown and a ditch or culvert to move it. Paving over ground that stays wet just puts a hard shell over a soft base, and it breaks up within a season or two.

What surface holds up best on a farm lane?

For pickups and tractors, chip seal or compacted recycled millings give a hard surface for less per foot. For loaded grain trucks, hot-mix asphalt over a thick compacted base is the better value, since it takes the weight without rutting where trucks turn.

Do I need to be home for the estimate?

It helps, because you know where water sits on the Chain of Rocks property and how the drive gets used. If you cannot be there, tell us what you want done when you call and we will work out the best way to walk the site and go over the details with you.

How much of a long lane can you pave at once?

As much as the budget allows. Long lanes around Chain of Rocks are often done in stages, starting at the road or at the worst stretch. We build each stage so the next one ties in cleanly rather than leaving a lip where the work stopped.
