We size equipment to the site, cut out failed material, compact rock in layers, and place hot-mix asphalt, typically 2 to 3 inches compacted for cars and pickups. The pad at the garage door and the apron at the alley get the most attention, since both fail first.

Parking lot pavingWe pave private streets, apartment and condo drives, church access lanes and the loading approaches behind commercial buildings. Each gets grading, a compacted base and a slope that moves water to a drain instead of a wall. Approaches off a main street get extra base where trucks turn in.
Road constructionNot every job is a full rebuild. Limestone and dolomite underlie the city, and the area south of downtown has sinkholes and caves, so water finds its way down in unexpected places. Add clay-heavy soils and freeze-thaw winters and any trapped moisture becomes a crack. We grade for runoff, remove soft soil, and compact rock in layers.
When you compare bids, ask each contractor for three numbers in writing: the compacted asphalt thickness, the base depth, and what happens to the water. Those three decide how long the surface lasts.

Yes. Alley access is normal here. We bring smaller equipment when the opening is tight, protect the alley surface, and build up the apron where the drive meets it, since that joint takes the worst of the turning and the water.
