Not many towns pick themselves up and move. After the Great Flood of 1993, Rhineland took federal funds to leave the floodplain and hauled its houses uphill, which is why the village now sits about a mile and a half north of the river while Highway 94 still runs through the old site at the base of the hill.
That leaves hillside lots, newer grades and drives built in a hurry decades ago. We pave driveways and parking lots here, plus farm yards and access lanes on the surrounding ground. A hillside drive fights the same water running off the slope above it. We set a cross slope so runoff crosses and leaves rather than following the drive down, add a drain or culvert where the volume calls for it, and compact the rock base in layers. A home drive typically finishes at 2 to 3 inches of hot mix, with the downhill edge supported.
Driveway pavingLot work here means a church, a winery or shop pad, or parking for trail traffic coming off the Katy Trail, which passes through the village. Those surfaces take delivery vans and the occasional bus, so the base is sized for that rather than for cars. We slope the pavement to a planned outlet and keep the entrance tight at Highway 94.
Parking lot pavingFarm lanes, field access and the short streets serving the relocated houses all need crown, ditches and a compacted rock base. We grade first, set the drainage, then pave to the width the equipment actually uses. Chip seal and recycled asphalt millings are practical on long lanes running down toward the bottoms.
Road constructionAround Rhineland we see plenty of pavement that has been patched over and over. Sometimes one more patch is the right call. Sometimes a mill-and-overlay or a rebuild saves money over the next ten years. We will lay out both options so you can choose.
Asphalt paving
Two kinds of ground meet here. The bottoms below are river alluvium that stays wet and floods. The uplands in this county include claypan soils with very slow permeability and a perched water table in winter and spring. Both hold water where pavement does not want it, so ditches, culverts and base depth carry the job.
Before you sign anything, get the base depth and the compacted asphalt thickness on paper. Two bids that look far apart are often just two different pavements.

It can be, with the entrance planned properly. Highway traffic means drivers turn in fast, so the apron and the first few feet of pavement take the punishment. We build that area heavier and set the approach so vehicles are not cutting the corner.
Sometimes. A drive cut into a slope may need a supported edge or a built-up shoulder so the pavement does not break away at the low side. We look at the cut and the fill during the free estimate and tell you what the grade actually requires.
Typically a compacted crushed-stone base several inches deep on firm soil, with soft spots dug out first, and that holds for any Rhineland driveway. On clay soils that hold water, a thicker base and good slope matter even more. The estimate states the base depth so there are no surprises.
Both. Patching a failed section, filling cracks before winter and rebuilding an apron are regular work in Rhineland. We will tell you honestly when patching is throwing good money after bad.
