What's under a Kell driveway
Sitting on a watershed divide does not mean the ground drains itself. Soil here holds water, slopes run it off fast and freeze-thaw works on whatever is left in the base. The fix is unglamorous: a grade that actually moves water, soft material removed, rock compacted in layers under the asphalt.
The part of the job you can see is the last two inches. Ask what is underneath, how it will be compacted, and which way the finished surface drains.
Compacted asphaltTypically 2 to 3 in. for a car drive
Stone baseTypically 4 to 8 in., compacted
Drive on itUsually 2 to 3 days, longer in heat
First sealcoatTypically 6 to 12 months after paving
Typical ranges. Your Kell estimate is sized to the soil, the traffic and the drainage on your property.
