Blacktop that holds up in Aviston

Route 50 was moved to a northern alignment in 1986, so the highway now runs past Aviston instead of through it. That leaves the village streets quieter and puts the heavier traffic on the business drives and lots near the bypass. We pave driveways and parking lots on both sides of that line, on a compacted rock base with the grade set to move water.

The village was laid out in 1836 and shifted south toward the railroad in the 1850s, which is why the older blocks sit close together with narrow drives. Newer ground on the edges has room for wider aprons and turnarounds. Either way, we cut out soft material, compact rock in layers and roll hot-mix asphalt to a dense finish. Driveway paving in Aviston

Older drives in the village center are narrow and sit close to the house, so fall away from the foundation is the first thing we set. On the newer edges there is room for a turnaround or a wider apron, and the base has to be built for whatever parks on it. In both cases we strip topsoil, compact rock in lifts and place hot-mix asphalt, typically 2 to 3 inches compacted for cars and pickups.

Parking lot paving in Aviston

St. Francis of Assisi has drawn people to this village since its cornerstone was laid in 1864, and a church lot has to handle a full crowd twice a week and sit empty the rest of the time. We build the base for that pattern, keep the drive aisles strong, and grade so water clears the lot. Shop and business lots near the Route 50 bypass get deeper base under truck lanes.

Road construction & private roads

Access drives running from the bypass to a shop or yard take the most weight of anything we build here. Loaded trucks turning off a highway punish a thin section. We thicken the base at the entrance, crown the lane and ditch the shoulders. Private lanes and shared farm drives get the same approach at a lighter section.

General asphalt paving & repair

In a town like Aviston, general asphalt work covers a lot of ground: shop and church lots, alley aprons, repairs along a curb line, overlays on older streets and pads for equipment. The approach stays the same: fix the base, lay the hot mix, roll it tight, finish the edges.

Why the base matters in Aviston

Clinton County ground is mostly flat, and flat ground drains slowly. A surface with no fall holds water, and held water freezes and heaves in winter. We set positive slope on every job, pull out soft material that would trap moisture, and compact the rock base in layers so the asphalt has something solid under it.

A cheap bid usually gets cheap somewhere you cannot see. Ask what depth of stone goes down, how thick the asphalt is after rolling, and who fixes it if water still stands.

Compacted asphaltTypically 2 to 3 in. for a car drive
Stone baseTypically 4 to 8 in., compacted
Drive on itUsually 2 to 3 days, longer in heat
First sealcoatTypically 6 to 12 months after paving

Typical ranges. Your Aviston estimate is sized to the soil, the traffic and the drainage on your property.

Aviston paving questions

Straight answers for Aviston homeowners and property managers. Anything else, call (866) 490-7680.

Does the Route 50 bypass change what my lot needs?

It can. A business lot that takes delivery trucks straight off the bypass needs a heavier entrance and a deeper base along the truck path than a lot fed by village streets. We ask what comes and goes, and how often, before setting the section at your free estimate.

Can you pave in Aviston, Trenton and Breese?

Yes. We pave in Aviston and the nearby Clinton County towns, including Trenton, Breese, St. Rose, Albers and Germantown, along with the rest of greater St. Louis on both sides of the river. Estimates are free and you get 25% off.

Should I sealcoat my new driveway right away?

No. Fresh asphalt in Aviston needs time to cure before it is sealed, typically several months and often up to a year. Sealing too early can trap oils in the pavement. After that, sealing every few years helps it resist water, sun and salt.

Will a new surface fix water standing in my lot?

Only if the grade changes. Paving over a low spot in Aviston leaves the same low spot in a smoother surface. We measure the fall first and tell you what it takes to move the water.
